Will the rug fit your room and furniture?

Use one cross-room tool for a rug in a living room, bedroom, dining room or another rectangular space. Enter the rug and room dimensions, then optionally check a measured furniture/use footprint.

Before you start

  • RequiredMeasure the room’s clear inside width/depth and the rug’s actual outside width/depth.
  • RequiredIf checking furniture coverage, measure the full footprint/use zone or the front-edge overlap you want.
  • For verificationConfirm dimensions on the rug and furniture labels; the diagram is a dimensional comparison, not a floor plan or styling recommendation.

How this check works

The tool tests both axis-aligned rug orientations against the measured room. It separately compares the rug with either a complete furniture/use footprint or a user-selected front-edge overlap and projection.

Step 1

Measure the room and rug

Enter clear inside room dimensions and the rug’s laid-flat outside dimensions.

Measure between the fixed inside faces at the narrowest usable point.

How to measure the usable inside span

Measure clear space between wall, frame or obstruction surfaces—not the advertised or nominal outside dimension.

How to measure rug width

Use the actual laid-flat rug dimensions. Include fringe only if it is part of the footprint you need to fit.

How to measure rug depth

Use the actual laid-flat rug dimensions rather than a room-size suggestion or nominal label.

Rug orientation

The rug may be checked with its width along either room axis.

How rug orientation is compared

This tests only a 90-degree rotation of a rectangular footprint; it does not model diagonal placement, irregular shapes or furniture arrangement.

Room-edge target

Enter the additional distance you personally want between every rug edge and the room walls.

How to choose a rug-to-wall border

This is a user-selected target, not a recommended or universal interior-design standard.

The border is your chosen layout target, not a universal rug-sizing rule.

Step 2

Choose what the rug should cover

You can check the rug alone or compare a measured furniture/use footprint.

Measure the width of the furniture or use zone between its fixed outermost points.

How to measure furniture or use zone width

Use exact model dimensions where available. Include fixed parts that remain on the furniture or use zone in this setup.

For a dining setup, enter the rectangular table/chair-use zone you want covered. For a bed or sofa, enter the footprint you want on the rug.

Furniture-edge target

Enter any extra rug border you personally want beyond the full measured furniture/use footprint.

How to choose a rug border around furniture

This is a user-selected target, not a universal rug-sizing rule. For dining, include chair movement in the footprint only if you want that area covered.

For an incomplete furniture measurement, uncheck the footprint test. Any front-edge overlap is checked as a user-entered dimension, not inferred from actual leg locations.

Result display units

Changes result display only; measurements already entered stay unchanged.

Enter lengths with mm, cm, m, in, ft, or ft/in. A number without a unit defaults to mm.

Tightest point: furniture/use footprint width on rug

Extra space beyond target: 40.0 cm1 ft 4 in

What this means

The measured footprint fits and meets your selected target. The tightest point is furniture/use footprint width on rug.

Next: Recheck the actual product dimensions and any model-specific instructions before buying or installing.

What these results mean
  • Fits: Hard physical requirements and selected or verified targets pass.
  • Tight: Physical fit passes, but one or more selected targets do not.
  • Does not fit: At least one hard physical or access requirement fails.
  • Needs information: Required measurement, source, model, manual or compatibility data has not been verified.

Assumptions

  • Example values are illustrative placeholders, not rug-size or styling recommendations.
  • The room and rug are rectangular. Automatic orientation tests only two axis-aligned positions: width-depth and a 90-degree rotation.
  • The extra 100 mm wall border is user-selected and is not a universal interior-design standard.
  • The full 1800 mm by 2000 mm furniture/use footprint should sit on the rug, with your selected 100 mm border.
  • The centered room view is a dimensional comparison, not a complete floor plan. The relationship view does not locate furniture, actual legs, angled rugs or irregular room shapes.

Scope and limitations

  • The room view centers the rug for a proportional comparison; it is not a furniture placement or floor-plan designer.
  • Rooms, rugs and furniture/use zones are treated as rectangles. Irregular shapes, diagonal placement, actual rug materials and exact furniture-leg locations are not modelled.
  • Wall borders, furniture borders, front overlap and forward projection are user-selected layout values, not style recommendations or universal standards.
  • For dining, include the chair-use area only if you want that complete measured zone on the rug; no seating or comfort rule is inferred.
