Monitor stand depth, viewing distance and desk depth
A Samsung Smart Monitor M7 M70B example shows why a monitor's screen size is not desk depth: the sourced base is 193.5 mm deep, while the panel without its stand is 41.8 mm deep. On a nominal 600 mm desk, placing that base flush to the rear leaves 406.5 mm of desktop in front of it. That remainder does not establish a comfortable viewing distance or fit for a keyboard, cable bend or other equipment.

- Monitor depth with stand
- 19.4 cm0 ft 8 in
- Monitor body depth without stand
- 4.2 cm0 ft 2 in
- Nominal reference desk depth
- 60.0 cm2 ft 0 in
- Desktop surface in front of stand if flush to rear edge
- 40.7 cm1 ft 4 inGeometric remainder only; not viewing distance or keyboard/cable clearance.
- CCOHS average resting point of accommodation
- 80.0 cm2 ft 7 inA physiological reference, not a required screen distance or desk-depth minimum.
- Cable, plug and ventilation space
- Measure the exact plug/cable bend and follow the monitor manual; no generic allowance is applied.
Assumptions for measure the complete workstation, not the screen diagonal
- The Samsung figures are one model-specific M70B example; other monitor bodies and stands differ.
- CCOHS says viewing-distance recommendations vary. Its approximately 80 cm resting-point-of-accommodation figure is physiological context, not a universal workstation minimum; arm length is only a starting estimate.
- Eye-to-screen distance is measured from the userβs eyes to the screen, not from the desk front edge. User posture, keyboard/mouse position, cable connectors and monitor ventilation are not modeled.
- No universal total desk-depth minimum is asserted. Measure the actual setup and keep the desk depth, stand footprint, viewing distance and cable/keyboard zones distinct.

States viewing-distance recommendations vary and are guidelines rather than fixed rules; average resting point of accommodation is about 80 cm, and arm length is a starting estimate adjusted to the person and task.
